September 13, 2017
 Meeting called to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Alice Kimmel, President.
 
Guest Speaker Elana West, Learwood’s “Avon Lake Big Kids Closet Resale”
Learwood Fundraiser October 21st 8am-12noon
If paying PTA member $25 for 10x10 space, non members $35
Only other fundraiser is concession stand
Admission fee and selling space go directly to Learwood PTA.
Sizes 4 up to adult, sports equipment, shoes, electronics, rugs, furniture etc. are acceptable.
 
Principal’s Report – Mr. Moore
Great Start to a new year. communications in many forms, twitter, Instagram, Facebook, remind, weekly emails, district webpage.
New Staff Members-Julie Norris, all day kindergarten. Betty Butts, librarian. Erin Monnot, Intervention Specialist Tutor. Grace Kaufmann, Tutor. Von Franke and Kandice Carson, nurses
Westview is a Title 1 school, purpose is to ensure all children have fair and equal opportunity to high quality education – extra support in forms of tutors.
Golden Paw change- Westview PAWS, monthly character traits to recognize and focus on, monthly assembly to recognize with t-shirt, 2 students to be recognized per grade quarterly.
Marco’s Pizza Nights we received $4,800 starts on 9-19. Recently funded assemblies, partnership with PTA for new laminator, Westview PAWS posters, TV in the hallway. Previously purchased chromebooks and prizes for kids on the move.

Mr. Scott is looking for new people to volunteer for Building Excellent Schools Team Committee
Homecoming, Chuck E. Cheese, levy committee help, Building Excellent Schools Team Committee, PTA Wheel of Fun- 15 staff this year so far
 
 
President’s Report – Alice Kimmel
Open Committees are by laws, curriculum Liaison, staff appreciation, testing bags, legislation, Public Relations, need 2nd council delegate. Please look into heading one of these.
If volunteer for PTA function need to be a member of PTA. No Sharing of Directory information. No Cash Payments to school. Label your child’s clothing. (generic shirts and pants with elastic waistband)
Book Fair this year October during teacher conferences 10-9 through 10-12
Changing newsletter, maybe add to website or eliminate.  to be discussed next meeting.
Please log your hours on the clip board. New members and old members’ introductions.

Report cards came home today, 11-9, any questions feel free to contact your teachers
Letter from Dr. Brad Cocco about accepting everyone and fostering an accepting environment
Continues here at Westview, treating others as you would like to be treated.
 
Recent Events
Color-a-thon was a huge success
Homecoming: waiting results on parade float winners
Marco’s pizza, currently in 6th place
Parent teacher conferences, if you we unable to attend, please contact your children’s teachers, they may be able to meet with you.
Avon Lake police officers spoke with 4th grade, opportunity for students to spend the day with an officer, essay written why the student would like spend day with officer.
Fire safety house for 3rd grade
Pink out spirit day was great, a lot of students and staff showed support for Piper
Student Council has a schedule for upcoming spirit days
Halloween Parade, parties were a lot of fun
3rd grade Ohio State Testing for English language arts 11-8 and 9 all online
Penny wars: $1,536.53 was raised for breakfast for service workers in Avon Lake and another project determined by Student Council.

$2,192 quote for Second Grade for a total of 8 more chrome books and software to run them
Technology is an additional tool to help them learn not the focus of learning

Called to order at 9 am and 7pm by President, Alice Kimmel, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Tru Pace was sworn in for council delegate.
 
Principal’s Report - Mr. Moore
Thank you for coming today and great to see some new faces.
Looking forward to another great year at Westview.
Traditions and change is good. Color walk was new last year, very successful.
Technology will be used more this year.
 
Mrs. Baker wrote a grant was able to purchase 5 additional chrome books
 
Technology night for parents September 15th. A sign up genius went out for attendance. Mr. Gerhan will focus on grades 3 and 4   Mrs. Bomback, along with Mr. Moore will focus on grades  K -2.
 
Examples that will be discussed - Learning google classroom, compass learning, and Raz kids.
Trying to keep it to an hour with room for questions.
 
Communication with parents this year to include:
Remind app with emails or texts
Every Friday weekly email goes out
Instagram account
Twitter account
Westview Facebook page is under construction
 
District website updated this year
Mrs. Randall and Mr. Moore updating and working on the Westview Elementary webpage

Please label all clothing. In addition, the front office is collecting generic clothing, non gender specific for kids who may get muddy or need clean clothing.
 
October 6 district PTA fall conference, spots available if interested in attending.
 
Change in Sunshine Committee per district can not make donations as a non profit. Leslie Knox is heading committee as a parent from Westview with no PTA connection, no budget.
 
Guest Speaker - Kristen Johnson school nurse
Food allergies
Heather Smith, mom of a child with severe food allergies, advocate for kids with allergies
Voluntary activities, be more mindful of allergies.
Westview will send allergy information letters home, safety measures in place with a list of acceptable snacks.
Sign up genius reminder of what food allergies are in the specific classroom.
Refer to safe snack guide, room parent to copy and paste for all parties.

Tara Kunzelman moved to approve May minutes, Leslie Knox seconded. All were in favor and motion passed.
Updating website, looking at possibly linking PayPal for PTA events
 
Treasurer’s Report – Carla Sattler

Vote on 2016-17 budget
A motion was made by Alessia Lloyd to approve the budget and Jennifer Tysl seconded, budget was approved by all.
Back to school lunch committee was successful with Subs and pasta salad.
Next Year have 1st day of school lunch instead.
 
Summer reading program 52 participating sky zone 30 min free jump
1 student from each grade awarded $10 Menchies gift card and $5 certificate to book fair
 
1st Vice President’s Report -  Jennifer Tysl
Membership, 142 members, including 21 staff.
$83 extra towards Andrew Marko scholarship
$57 extra for council fund for senior scholarship
Head room parent will get list of volunteers to go out with each event to improve volunteer numbers
Head room parent meet with teacher get more parent involvement
Yearbook same price as last year $15 custom cover
Fall pics October 4 with retakes November 15 also candid day, plus 4th grade group picture
March 7 spring pictures, envelopes coming home (optional)
Camp Imagine (Cheryl Higley) reverse raffle donate a basket for raffle for camp in summer Theme: Date night cash donations and gift cards. Alessia Lloyd to handle collections.
Birthday book club due Friday October 21 to include July August, September and October birth months

10th annual Wildcat Walk/2nd Annual Color Walk
Color walk registration tonight at book fair, registration online available.
Children need to be registered to participate.
Deadline 15th to receive prize, bags, shirt and color. Only 78 students registered as of September 14.
 
April Fundraising with Easter Seals: Spring Cleanup, not just Westview city wide collection.
The truck gets weighed and we are paid accordingly, money stays in Cleveland.
Sports wear - due date was September 9th for orders. Extended to September 23rd
Potentially add a Spring order.
